The Akaroa Civic Trust is an active and effective guardian of the town’s historic character
and charm. As a volunteer organisation of more than fifty years, it works to increase
awareness of the town’s important place in Aotearoa New Zealand’s historical and
architectural development, set in one of the country’s most stunning landscapes. The Civic
Trust is also committed to protecting the town’s historic streetscapes and maintaining the
wellbeing of the Akaroa Harbour for future generations.
The Civic Trust was founded by local residents in 1969 to preserve Akaroa’s rich bicultural
history and character. Its members work with Members of Parliament, national
organisations, Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, and the Christchurch City Council on
many issues including those relating to the District Plan that impact the development of the
town and surrounding area. The Trust supports new developments that are in harmony with
Akaroa’s historic character and encourages appropriate adaptive new uses for the town’s
historic buildings, helping to support many local businesses.
After more than fifty years, the Akaroa Civic Trust continues its work to preserve the historic
character of the town.
