This cottage was built in 1868 for Demetrius Koinomopolous, a Greek boatman and launch proprietor. In 1885, Demetrius married Bodiline Sorrensen, a Dane. The marriage illustrates that in the 19th century people from many different countries made their homes in Akaroa. Demetrius and Bodiline became a respected Akaroa couple, renowned for their garden and orchard. Demetrius died in 1922.
Their home remains a handsome cottage of its vintage, largely unaltered. The attic rooms are still lit by windows in the gable ends. The steep pitch of the roof and the verandah give the cottage a particularly pleasing appearance.
