Though the year it was built is uncertain, this is almost surely the cottage that was sold to George Armstrong, a member of a family prominent in Akaroa’s history. Later owners were also members of other families with long histories in Akaroa – the Narbeys, Penlingtons and Vangionis. It was bought by Margaret and George Chaney in the late 1970s.
The simple, gable-ended cottage has windows in the gable ends to light the attic floor. The verandah along its frontage has a curved roof that is not continuous with the roof-line of the main part of the cottage. The verandah is supported by posts with wooden brackets at their heads. To the rear is a lean-to which is another typical feature of New Zealand colonial cottages.
