SHOP, 67 BEACH ROAD

Though its street frontage has been altered, this is one of the oldest surviving shop buildings on Beach Road.

Category: Commercial Buildings
Date: 1876/1888
Street Address: 67 Beach Road
HPT registered? No
District Plan Listed? Yes

Judging by old photographs, this shop is older than its two immediate neighbours. The photos suggest it was built some time between 1876 and 1881. It stands approximately on the site of a photographic studio, which was used by two of the photographers who have left valuable images of the town – William Watkins and Jessie Buckland. One long-time lessee ran a shoe shop in the building.

It has been significantly altered above its street-level verandah, with dormer windows and a small balcony added. The most recent changes date from the 1990s. Since ceasing to be the town’s shoe shop it has been used for a variety of commercial purposes.
