COTTAGE, 17 RUE BALGUERIE

More substantial than many earlier cottages, this elegant home is distinguished by a prominent cross gable and bay windows.

Category: Dwellings
Date: About 1878
Street Address: 17 Rue Balguerie
HPT registered? Yes
District Plan Listed? Yes

The handsome bay windows on each side of the central entrance of this cottage are embellished with cast-iron lacework. The prominent cross gable gives the cottage a spacious and well-lit upper storey. This suggest the cottage is later than its smaller cousins which had attic floors lit by windows in the gable end or small dormers. The conjecture that it was built between 1878 and 1882 is probably correct.

It has been a residence for most of its life, but for a time in the 1970s housed one of the earliest of Akaroa’s modern restaurants, L’Auberge Suzette.
