MADEIRA HOTEL

A four-square, two-storeyed building, the Madeira is typical of older hotels in many small New Zealand towns.

In 1907 the Licensing Commission put pressure on hotel owners throughout Canterbury to improve their premises or risk losing their licences. In the case of the Madeira Hotel, this prompted the building of a new hotel next-door to the old (see Chez La Mer).

The 1907 Madeira Hotel is a typical small-town hotel of its era. The square, two-storeyed building has a cantilevered balcony along its street frontage.

It remains one of the town’s hotels, a century after it was built.
